Newsflash | Whatsapp groups’ sharing frenzies curbed

Media24 is pleased that a precedent-setting Western Cape High Court judgment, handed down this week, found in its favour. The order comes after Media24 asked two ladies, who had paid subscriptions, to desist from sharing pdf copies of its journalists’ material with their 900-member whatsapp groups. The women were also ordered to hand over their cell phones to Media24 for investigations and in order to calculate the quantum of royalties payable to Media24.

This judgment is a loud and clear warning to respect copyrighted material – in this instance, the product of quality journalism which is very expensive to create and crucial for an informed society.
