We have reported earlier in the week that the Pretoria Deeds Office closed abruptly on Monday for the 3rd time this month for decontamination after an individual who tested positive for Covid entered the Deeds Office building.
We expected backlogs in the processing of property transfers but we were unsure to what extent. We have now been informed that the Pretoria Deeds Office currently has a backlog of approximately 17 500 deeds. This backlog will have a negative impact on all transactions. The problem is compounded by a forced reduction in Deeds Office staff, as well as staff working on a rotational basis due to the severity of the 3rd Wave currently in full force in Gauteng.
We have further been advised to start applying for extended rates and levy clearance certificates in matters where such certificates will expire within the next 30 days.
We urge all our clients to not make moving arrangements without checking on timelines first. We have yet again entered unprecedented times and the expected delays are completely beyond our control, but we will attempt to manage the situation to the best of our ability, and continue to keep you informed.
