The Reserve Bank increased the repo rate by 75 basis points to 5.5% per year, this afternoon, a fifth successive rate hike by the monetary policy committee. This hike and the 50 basis points hike in May this year, are the two largest successive increases in more than five years. The adjustments follow in consequence of efforts to curb accelerating inflation and protect the weakened Rand.
