Following the closure and ongoing disrupted operation of the South Gauteng Deeds Registry: Johannesburg (‘the Johannesburg Deeds Office’) for alleged non-compliance with occupational health and safety requirements, officials have now approved the relocation of the Johannesburg Deeds Office to a new building within the next six weeks.
After the Department of Labour prohibited access to the elevators in the Marble Towers Building, which houses the Johannesburg Deeds Office, due to purportedly unsafe working conditions, services have been severely disrupted.
Regrettably, this has caused delays in the lodgement and registration of countless property transactions, which is beyond our control.
Following meetings between officials and various stakeholders, a decision has been taken to relocate the Johannesburg Deeds Office to alternative premises – identified and approved by government – within six weeks.
In the meantime, the below transitional working arrangements apply:
- Various Deeds Office staff will rotate in examining deeds and documents from home
- Printouts, tracking requests, and other similar requests may be performed on the building’s mezzanine level
- The removal of notes and attempts to restore may be performed on the first floor
As Deeds Office officials commit to minimising delays and restoring services, we endeavour to keep you informed of any new developments.
