With the automatic assessment of a large contingent of taxpayers commencing today, the 2025/26 tax season is officially underway.
It is imperative that individual taxpayers, employers, and tax service providers remain aware of the deadlines for the filing of income tax returns. Accordingly, taxpayers should take proactive steps to organise their documents, gather the necessary information, and meet all compliance-related deadlines, irrespective of whether they are preparing and completing their own returns or using a tax service provider.
According to SARS, the due dates for the filing of income tax returns for individuals are as follows:
- Non-provisional taxpayers: On or before Monday, 20th October 2025
- Provisional taxpayers: On or before Monday, 19th January 2026
Taxpayers are advised to scrutinise and verify their auto-assessed returns. Those who believe crucial information is missing are encouraged to update and submit their income tax returns via eFiling by Monday, 20th October 2025. Taxpayers who are satisfied with their auto-assessment are not required to take any further action.
Despite these streamlined processes, SARS has issued a stern warning to taxpayers about a new fraudulent SMS scam targeting personal information under the pretext of a tax refund audit. The message contains a link to a phishing website intended to steal recipients’ personal information. The institution has accordingly urged taxpayers to remain vigilant, verify the authenticity of all communication, and report any suspicious activity.
