Reflecting on the historical significance of Youth Day and the critical importance of community service, we are pleased to report on the continued positive impact of uPhawu Community Development – a proud STBB-sponsored corporate social responsibility initiative benefiting children in need.
Established in 2015 and located in the Samora Machel informal settlement in Philippi, Cape Town, the uPhawu Reading Club – a dedicated aftercare facility – currently provides 63 children, aged 6 to 18, with a safe and comfortable space to complete their homework after school, engage in book sharing, storytelling, and discussions, and benefit from vocabulary-building lessons to improve their reading and writing skills.
In addition, 22 children currently participate in our growing arts programme, which includes drama and other creative interactive activities. During recent quarterly outings, participating children attended the Artscape Book Play and Career Expo, visited the Baxter Theatre and Magnet Theatre, and enjoyed a memorable and exciting day at Muizenberg Park.
At the same time, our dedicated soup kitchen continues to meaningfully address food insecurity and hunger-related barriers to learning in Samora Machel by supporting more than 100 community beneficiaries through the regular provision of warm, nutritious meals and food packs.
In the spirit of Youth Day and the underlying objectives of STBB4Good, uPhawu’s achievements highlight the ongoing importance of investing in the development and well-being of vulnerable children as a critical step towards building a brighter and hopeful future for the next generation.
