{"id":35458,"date":"2024-05-24T15:47:54","date_gmt":"2024-05-24T13:47:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stbb.co.za\/dev2\/?p=35458"},"modified":"2025-11-10T11:29:53","modified_gmt":"2025-11-10T09:29:53","slug":"stbb-newsflash-anti-gender-based-violence-and-femicide-bill-signed-into-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stbb.co.za\/dev2\/stbb-newsflash-anti-gender-based-violence-and-femicide-bill-signed-into-law\/","title":{"rendered":"STBB Newsflash | Anti-Gender-Based Violence and Femicide Bill Signed into Law"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier today, President Ramaphosa signed the National Council on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide Bill (\u2018the Bill\u2019) into law.<\/p>\n<p>The Bill, which recognises gender-based violence and femicide (\u2018GBVF\u2019) as a pressing \u2018social evil\u2019 compounded by decades of structural violence, aims to establish a legislative foundation to eliminate all forms of GBVF at the national, provincial, and local levels.<\/p>\n<p>Underpinned by the constitutional rights to life, equality, bodily integrity, and human dignity, the landmark Bill provides for the establishment, functions, and composition of a National Council on GBVF (\u2018the Council\u2019). The Bill designates the Council as a juristic entity and public body which will act through a Board comprised of <em>inter alia<\/em> representatives from civil society organisations and various government departments.<\/p>\n<p>The Council\u2019s chief objective is to provide \u2018strategic leadership\u2019 as part of a co-ordinated, multi-sectoral approach to eradicate the scourge of GBVF.
