{"id":2023,"date":"2019-03-12T10:55:07","date_gmt":"2019-03-12T08:55:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stbb.co.za\/dev2\/?p=2023"},"modified":"2022-02-10T16:06:11","modified_gmt":"2022-02-10T14:06:11","slug":"new-monetary-threshold-for-small-claims-court","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stbb.co.za\/dev2\/new-monetary-threshold-for-small-claims-court\/","title":{"rendered":"Thought of the Week | New Monetary Threshold For Small Claims Court"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier this month, in a notice published in the Government Gazette, it was confirmed that the monetary jurisdiction of Small Claims Courts will be increased to R20 000 from 1 April 2019 onwards.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Justice and Constitutional Development Deputy Minister, John Jeffery, the new threshold is expected to go some way towards addressing a growing tendency for plaintiffs to \u2018abandon parts of their claims\u2019 to bring them within the existing R15 000 jurisdiction of the Small Claims Courts.<\/p>\n<p>These forums remain available for civil claims only and where parties represent themselves.
